A well maintained PC can have a long life.
For example, it depends on how well the machine is made—if it has got good air supply, that helps a lot. On some smaller machines you will see pretty poor air flow. They are so compact that the air flow is so bad, that it causes so much overheating that in some cases; a capacitor will blow meaning, you need to buy a new motherboard or even a new PC if your machine is out of warranty.
A well designed PC is made to last. One of our team has a 7-year-old Dell laptop, with 2 GB of RAM and a 120 GB hard drive; even now it’s still as fast as ever because he rebuilds it every so often.
